Cloisonné Enamel
What is Cloisonné Enamel?
The short answer is that cloisonné enamel is my absolute passion.
The longer answer is that it is a technique used to decorate a metal surface with vitreous enamel. Cloisonné is distinguished from other enamel techniques by the use of small compartments separated by thin wire. Vitreous enamel is finely powdered glass with rich color pigments.
When creating a piece, I carefully layer enamel into the small compartments, then fuse it by heat to the metal surface. It can take 12-20 layers and firings to achieve the final result. It’s detailed and time-consuming work, and oh-so-rewarding.
You can see cloisonné enamel in beautiful objects d’arts dating back centuries from all across Europe and Asia.
